ALL I’M SAYING IS groundhog day is the only time loop media (that i’ve seen and can remember, lol) that has the main character’s arc satisfied once he is finally at peace with staying in the time loop for all of eternity. every other one i’ve seen has the protagonist’s journey only being truly over AFTER they’ve left the time loop, and only once they’re back in regular life/have overcome whatever’s trapping them in the loop have they actually completed their character arc. phil’s journey is done once he’s finally content staying in groundhog day for the rest of his conceivable existence. this is true of the movie but especially in the musical; phil has completed his transformation by the ending notes of seeing you, and that whole song is him coming to finally accept never leaving the loop, and being okay with that. after he’s spent a whole lifetime in punxsutawney, he’s finally at peace
with what he has and doesn’t want any more, and he learns to be happy
with making other people happy. we see him wake up on february 3rd because it’s something that we want, we want the character to be rewarded in exchange for the suffering and transformation he’s been through, but it’s not necessarily something he wants, or even needs.
